Starring Lucille Ball as the quintessentially daffy Lucy, I Love Lucy was one of the most defining sitcoms ever broadcast on American television.

Originally aired for six seasons between October 1951 and May 1956, I Love Lucy became an instant favorite among audiences and was the only show until Seinfeld in 1998, to end its run whilst still ranked at the top of national Nielsen Ratings. In like regard, even as recently as 2012, the show was voted as the greatest television offering of all time, as voted by respondents to polls ran by ABC News and People Magazine.

Series Synopsis & Appeal

Detailing the theatrical and often hilarious antics of Lucy and her Husband Ricky Ricardo, I Love Lucy was originally set in and around the couple's fictional New York apartment building. Here, the show was subsequently complemented by larger than life characters such as Lucy and Ricky’s best friends and landlord.

Of course, it was Lucille Ball herself who was the defining star of the show. Rated as one of the most likable characters in television history, the Lucy in the show was defined in each episode by her penchant for getting her and Ricky into all kinds of trouble, as she desperately sought stardom in show business. The only problem? Unlike her off-screen alter ego, Lucy herself had few actual stage skills and was often met with disappointment.

With all kinds of performance opportunities dissolving into disaster, the Lucy in the show was nevertheless buoyed by some successes. These included her replacing a clown in one of her husband’s stage performances, as well as a particularly memorable episode entitled Hollywood, in which Lucy dances flawlessly with a rubber dummy as a dancing partner for a major studio benefit.

Cast & Other Leading Characters

Often accompanied by her sidekick and best friend Ethel Mertz, I Love Lucy was just as much defined by Lucy’s on-screen friends and costars as it was Lucille Ball herself. These included Ethel’s ever money conscious husband Fred, Ricky, and Ricky’s agent Jerry.

Famous for reverting to his native Spanish whenever exasperated by Lucy, Cuban husband Ricky Ricardo was often just as much a star of the show as Lucy herself. In mind of this, particularly memorable episodes in the show occasionally diverted away from Lucy’s ongoing quest for stardom and focused instead on the backstory of how the couple originally met in Havana. In the meantime, the show even went so far as to synchronize the on-screen birth of the couple’s son Ricky Jnr, with the birth of actress Lucille Ball’s real first born.

Ratings & Awards

Winner of the award for best overall comedy show and several supporting actor and actress awards, I Love Lucy was an instant hit with audiences wherever the show was syndicated. In like regard, the show has a legacy of being the longest that has ever been continually broadcast in Los Angeles, while also spurring a number of documentaries, television films, and latterly broadcast special episodes.
