As far as fast paced drama goes, Third Watch had audiences on the edges of their seats from 1999 through to 2005. Following the tumultuous lives of several New York first response emergency service crews, Third Watch echoed the very best of other series like ER, and fast became the most popular NBC drama of the early 2000’s
Set in and around the fictional New York 55th Precinct, Third Watch followed the personal as well as professional tribulations of New York police, firefighters, and paramedics on New York’s notorious graveyard shift. Moreover, the series was one of the first US dramas to couple fast paced and ultimately epic single episodes, with multiple episode, dramas and storyline developments.
Winning an award for the series portrayal of events leading up to and after September 11th, 2001, the greatest achievement of Third Watch was to seamlessly tell the multiple stories of several different emergency response groups; these and those of several individual characters from a variety of personal and professional backgrounds.
Co-created by ER writer and producer John Wells and ex-Chicago cop Ed Bernero, Third Watch strove to create as true to life a depiction of the challenges which many emergency service workers face every day. However, at times Third Watch was criticized in this regard, for the show's depiction of a multitude of violent confrontations.
However, the true to life nature of Third Watch led only to the show becoming a b favorite among many viewers, especially when combined with award winning episodes such as ‘In Their Own Words’ and ‘September 10th.’
Lasting in the series until the start of the Third Watch 6th and final season, Eddie Cibrian and Michael Beach led Third Watch through many of the series most dramatic moments. Meanwhile, fellow leading actors in the show such as Kim Raver were launched by the success of Third Watch into finding fame with other notable series such as 24.
In the meantime, many of the shows original cast who were not killed off in the show continued to make guest appearances throughout the series, most notably during the series final episode, ‘Goodbye to Camelot.’
Consistently drawing an average of 15 million weekly viewers, Third Watch was and still is one of the most recognized and acclaimed NBC dramas ever. Bolstered in popularity especially by the season three 9/11 themed episode ‘In Their Own Words,’ Third Watch subsequently won a prestigious Peabody Award. Moreover, the acclaim of this episode was itself aided by the show's inclusion of real life interviews with actual 9/11 first respondents.
However, as well as series-centric awards, Third Watch also saw many leading cast members nominated for best actor and actress awards, specifically in regard to the series portrayal of African American and Latino characters. In the meantime, Third Watch was also nominated for several Primetime Emmy Awards in regard to the stunts and special effects featured in the series.
Now available in the series entirety, home viewers can own the full Third Watch series collection as part of a dedicated DVD box set.
Encompassing 132 uncut episodes spread over six gripping and ultimately epic seasons, Third Watch can now be yours to own and enjoy right from the comfort of your own home.
