Zorro (1957) The Complete Series DVD Collection
Zorro” takes place in the course of the time of Spanish occupation of California (pre-1820 earlier than Mexico gained independence for California and took management of the state). The place members of the Spanish colonial government are oppressing the Mexicans and Indians who occupy the land. Meanwhile, Don Diego de la Vega (performed by Man Williams, “Misplaced In Space”, “Captain Sinbad”, “Bonanza”), a scholar who trained in Spain makes his return to California along along with his mute sidekick Bernardo (performed by Gene Sheldon) and to see how people are being oppressed by Capitan Monastario (played by Britt Lomond, “The Legend of Wyatt Earp”).
Zorro was Walt Disney’s first prime-time half-hour collection and it benefits significantly from Disney’s eager eye for casting, storytelling genius, and excessive production values. The solid includes Henry Calvin as the bumbling and rotund Sergeant Garcia and Gene Sheldon as Diego’s trusty, mute right -hand man Bernardo (the two actors were later paired as the Laurel & Hardy-esque characters in Disney’s Babes in Toyland ). Zorro deftly blends motion and comedy in its first season, with no mushy romance to slow things down. Diego/Zorro possesses a rapier-like wit with which he handily disarms his foes.
Zorro was a half-hour Walt Disney Productions TELEVISION sequence based on the properly-identified Zorro character. It premiered October 10, 1957 on ABC. The ultimate community broadcast was June 2, 1959. In total seventy-eight episodes have been produced and four specials were aired on the Walt Disney anthology collection between October 30, 1960 and April 2, 1961. I never had the opportunity to see the sequence throughout its initial run (before my time), however when the Disney Channel first took to the airwaves, Zorro was a staple of the channel.
On the second season set is Behind the Masks (8 minutes), about Guy Williams. It consists of interviews with Man Williams Jr. and Buddy Van Horn, who did stunts for Williams. In A Journey to the Archives (eight minutes), Maltin and Williams Jr. take a look at some previous Zorro costumes and memorabilia.
